I’m really SICK of hearing people saying ‘oh the Mariners will be lucky if they even do better than last year’. I’m sick of them saying we’re just going to be terrible.
Look at what we did last year, we had one of the best pitching staffs in the LEAGUE. Through last season a lot of the pitchers have improved/matured and we’ve made a few signings to improve even more. We’re looking at a rotation of Felix-Vargas-Bedard-Fister-Pineda, then a not so bad bullpen to back it up.
Now I will talk about offense, okay, we were the worst in offense last year and I am not denying that. But look, we had so many underachievers and young players last year. Just like our pitching, our hitting has matured so I look for a lot more production this year out of guys like Saunders, Smoak and Guti. Then we have the more mature players that didn’t do so good last year like Milton, Figgy and Jack Wilson. Now, I don’t expect Milton to do a ton but I do see him doing better than last year now that he has settled in and taken care of personal problems. With Figgy, he just plain out underachieved last year. Bottom line, he will do better this year and I see him getting back to his career norm. Jack Wilson is a guy that will give you his on D and hit .250 - .275 as long as he stays healthy. But wait, we also signed vets like Olivo and Cust. Safeco was built for lefty hitters so Cust is going to be solid if he can stay healthy. Olivo on the other hand is a dead pull hitter but he can still hit for .250 and get 10-15 HR’s. Also, he will be a nice veteran influence for guys like Adam Moore.
So can everybody just have some faith?! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see us contending. But we have a real chance of getting to .500. We have improved a bunch from last season, our pitching is still just as good or even better and our hitting is much better.
So my hope, .500 this year. Then next year.. Who knows?
